In his seminal book on Indian Muslims, Dr. Rafiq Zakaria poignantly illustrates the trauma leading to the country's division, a colossal tragedy, a catastrophe, blood bath brought about by Mr. Jiinnah, the Muslim League and cynical felicitations, which failed to grasp the implications of dividing the country on communal basis.  

The consequences suffered by Mahatma Gandhi, Nehru, Vallabhbhai Patel, Maulana Azad and others, the bitter and acrimonious exchanges, thereafter, which all along dominated the historiography on "Rationalism", "Communalism" and "Muslim separatism" continue to haunt us today.  

Dr. Zakaria explores these aspects, pokes into events which directly or indirectly impinged on the sudden and total breakdown of long-standing inter-community relationships, networks and alliances between Hindus and Muslims.  

The fallout is that it has raised decades of mutual suspicious antipathies and hate philosophies which eventually took the dark face of communalism. In addition speculative theories to lend respectability to British Colonialism and offer correctives to the Islamist and Hindutva world-view, have in equal measure, created widespread confusion in the minds of the common people causing incalculable damage to the state and civil society.
